Fort Monroe, Aug. 10th. 1867

Alexander Washington (cold.) citizen of Elizabeth City County, deposes and says, that he was formerly slave to Mr Joseph Segar; has lived on land of said Segar during the late war; saw great quantities of wood cut and hauled from the timber land belonging to the said Segar, and known as "Roseland"; states that the small timber on said land was cut by the U.S. troops and used in the construction of Commissary buildings, stables, bake houses, cabins &c.  That the large timber was cut, corded, penned, hauled away and sold or used by the colored people, throughout the county.  States that the timber on said land was being steadily cut and hauled, by U.S. troops and colored people, from 1861 to 1865.
