stationed in and about Camp Hamilton; that they were supplied with fire wood and material for building camps from the neighboring forests, and that timber was freely cut by them from Mr Segar's farm; that during the same period there were about an equal number of "contrabands" who supplied themselves freely from the Segar and other farms in the vicinity.

It is wholly impossible to ascertain exactly what proportion of the wood taken was consumed by colored people - I do not think a better estimate than that one half of Mr Segars timber was cut by colored persons can be fairly made; that is my opinion.

The records of the Bureau show nothing in reference to the occupancy of Mr Segar's land by destitutes.
