and to their credit have done better than many of the white citizens.
Such is the report from the leading class of white citizens, when they speak fairly and without prejudice. And they can but admit that the Freedmen in their habits of industry and deportment furnish an example worthy of imitation by a large class of Whitemen of their districts.
I visited nearly every part of the county, making it a special point to visit all Boards of Registration for the more convenient purpose of seeing the people together, and learning their views, and having a better opportunity to give the colored people such information as provided best serve their interest.
I found but very few that have any true idea of the purposes of Registration or the proper course to be pursued by them.
