there the Whites thinking that the Colored are arming and drilling for the purpose of making an attack upon them at some future time, and the Blacks thinking that they are unnecessarily and harshly treated by them; engenders a feeling of distrust between them which is not easily reconciled.

There is no mistaking the feeling of the White Citizens against every move and every effort made to improve or elevate the Black mans condition while on the other hand the Black man feels that he has certain rights and is anxious to know what they are, and how best to procure, protect, and maintain the same.
