In these Counties like those of Richmond and Westmoreland the Freedman are doing all; their means will allow in building houses for worship and for schools.

There is but one School in this Division and that established near Heathville and sustained entirely by Miss Emily Howland a patriotic Lady from New York, who at her own expense fitted a building and commenced her labors as teacher some months since and is meeting with good success. Her school now numbers Fifty scholars and an attendance of Forty daily. The scholars have made great improvement, and in justice to Miss Howland I would say that her school is second to none (for the length of time and the branches taught in her school).
