Chesterfield Va Aug 24th 67 D Sr I am a good citizen of Va. and of the U.S.A. and always have been. I took no active part in the rebellion, and I am therefore outraged to a Degree Beyond forbearance, and I have applyed in vain to the Civil authority for protection, and as a last resort I now humbly ask that you extend to me that protection which is Due me as a good and Loyal Citizen; amongnst manny outrages, whitch has been practiced on me I will in a short way State to you one that has just been practiced on me. — It is this to wit. I was on my way to Richmond and I had to pass the House of one Haley Coal. (who was a Justice of the Peace when the Rebellion Broke out and who held an office in the reb — government.) in passing his House His Dog Came in the Public Road and tryed to Bite me, and I showed a Disposition to Defend myself and he stood within 30 steps of his Dog and Didnot Speak a word to [[strikethrough]]the[[/strikethrough]] him.
