Quartermaster General's Office
Washington, D.C., Oct 16 1867.

Bvt. Major General O.O. Howard.
Com'r Bureau Freedman &c.
Washington City

General:
In the matter of Daniel Shepard, relative to arrears claimed for services in the Burial Corps from 1st to 31st August 1866, and whose case was submitted through your office in a communication from Bt. Lt. Col. James Johnson, Sub. Asst. Commr, Freedmen's Bureau, dated June 2, 1867, you are respectfully informed that all the papers in the case were referred to Bvt. Lt. Col. James M. Moore, Chief Quartermaster at Richmond, Va., for report.

That officer states in reply that, Shepard being absent when payments were made to employe's at Fredericksburg for the month of August '66, the amount due him was placed in the hands of the Superintendent in charge of the Burial Corps, with instructions to hand the same to claimant when found. Failing in this he turned the money over to Colonel Johnson, taking his receipt therefor.

The latter officer recently informed the Superintendent that Shepard had been paid over a month ago.

I am, General, very respectfully,
Your obedient servant.
(Signed) D.H. Rucker
