by the sickness of Capt. O'Neill during the month of November. Lt. Dunn has had but little experience in Bureau matters and his manner did not give the best assurance that the interests of the Freedmen would be well looked after.

Schools. In this division there is one flourishing school at Abingdon, taught by Mr. Parks from N.Y assisted by his mother and wife. These teachers are exerting a salutary influence among all classes. A large Sabbath school is maintained.

A new School house has been erected towards which the Bureau appropriated (400) Four hundred dollars. Arrangements have been made for the erection of a School house at Bristol but owing to the failure of the Colored people to procure a good title to the land the work has been suspended until a good title can be procured. Towards this the Bureau appropriated (202 75/100) dollars which is retained by the Asst. Sub. Asst. Comr., until the completion of the contract to furnish materials.
