General:

The American Missionary Association beg leave respectfully to represent that among their labors for the Freed people of color, they are engaged in establishing a Normal and Industrial School near Hampton Va., with primary reference to the training of teachers for the Freedmen, from among themselves, but also with a view to preparing them for higher usefulness in all the honorable walks of life. In the purchase of land, the fitting up of buildings, and other expenses necessary to this work, they have appropriated about $25000, and find on careful calculation, that the completion of the buildings, and providing accommodations for the pupils will require an additional expenditure of about six thousand five hundred dollars
