Between Cherrystone and Cape Charles, on the Eastern Shore of Va., is a region occupied by those who's great grandfathers lived there before them, who are the almost unmixed descendants of the old English settlers.  They have little respect for such innovations as newspapers, and but few letters even reach them from the outside world.  In the conceit of their ignorance they are bitterly opposed to their own improvement, or to the elevation of freedmen, and the latter, reflecting, as usual, the characteristics of their white neighbors, are unusually degraded.  They are, I am informed, much given to concubinage or promiscuous intercourse, though, I must say, a respect for the marriage relations appears to be gaining ground among the freedmen of this sub district.  I hope, before long to establish one or two schools on this portion of the Eastern Shore, and am informed that the colored people are ready to do liberally for the support of them.  In Accomac Co. quite a number have purchased land, and in both Counties the better part of freedmen are becoming settled, though, owing to exhorbitant rents, it is impossible for them to accumulate property.
