In traveling through the country one cannot but be struck with the large numbers of healthy looking children, - or some indication that the colored population is on the increase, and will be, therefore, of increasing importance as an element in the body politic and social, one is also struck with the large per cent of light colored youth. In Miss Patten's flourishing school at Eastville, out of over 114 scholars hardly ten per cent are pure blacks. The conclusions from this as to morality in point of fact, respectability, they are terrible upon the whites, in whose honor the freedpeople have been as potter clay. Yet with this army of witness to their immorality before their eyes, they look upon the most sincere and devoted missionary in their midst as not "respectable".

There is a good deal of public worship but religion here seems to lack the fibre of morality. Of course there are many exceptions - there are among whites many noble examples of pure
