Laurenceville Va July 6th 1868

Respectfully returned. Upon careful investigation of the matter within named it is found that the statements made are literally true as to the destitute condition of the people, but I do not think that there will be an actual starvation, for the garden vegetables & what crop are now being realised to a relief in a measure of this destitution, Furthermore should the government again open such an avenue to increase its burden it could scarcely find a stopping place in the state, for there is not only a scarcity of corn in the section within named but in many other localities in this Division & even throughout the state.
