"There were two men arrested in Northampton Co (one white and one colored) charged with "rape", the colored man with "rape" on a white girl and the white with rape on a colored girl. They were both tried and as I understand it, about the same evidence in both cases, & the colored man has been condemned to be hung July 4th, 1868, and the white man, who committed the rape on a colored girl, retained in jail for a further hearing. I have just been informed by a citizen of the said Northampton Co that the colored girl was positive as to the identity of the white man, but the white girl could not swear that the colored man was the one who seduced her.

Can an investigation be had in this case?

I hope if Justice is to be meeted out to one it will be to the other."
