The subject of Temperance receives its share of attention and encouragement and is having a beneficial effect.

There are flourishing Sabbath Schools in nearly every neighborhood when there are a sufficient number of Colored people to organize One. It is to be regretted that the facts compel us to report that the Colored preachers who are sent here by the various churches to instruct these people in religion and morale do not encourage Temperance or labor to suppress unchastity in their Churches or encourage Schools except to benefit their own sect. In some cases they publicly oppose Temperance organization and denounce the efforts of the Bureau to establish Schools as of no benefit to the people. One case reported where a colored Elder of the M.E. Church refused to preach in a School Room where there was a U.S. Flag suspended on the Wall.
