The Asst. Comr, Dist. of Va. directs an investigation of the burning of a Freedmen's Church at Mockstown, Accomac Co. Va. reported in last report under Circular 6.

The statement not considered satisfactory, as it is not stated if it was the malicious act of whites or colored, or an accident.

Respectfully returned (thro Hd Qrs 5th Sub. Dist. Va.) to Bvt Brig Genl O. Brown  After careful investigation by inquiry I learn that this church was set on fire, there being evidence of this in the fact that straw and other combustible material were [[strikethrough]] was [[/strikethrough]] traced to the building on the following morning.

This house was doubtless maliciously burned by white Democrats to prevent the colored people from holding a contemplated public meeting.
