when she [[strikethrough]] said [[/strikethrough]] told me that Skinner had been arrested and tried by Rufus Smith J.P. and was cited to appear to answer an indictment before the Grand Jury at the next quarterly term of the Court.  I immediately went to the Clerks Office and inquired if the papers in the case had been received and was informed that they had been.  In my Official capacity I have settled the account between Sarah Thomas and Mr. Skinner for the hire of her children.

It is not to be supposed, however that an Officer who would neglect his duty as is alleged in the present case could be expected to report the facts of the case when called upon to do so by his superiors

I have been on duty in this Bureau since Sept. 15th 1865 and have discharged my duties in all cases, in too conscientious a manner to allow, for a moment, a shadow of suspicion to rest upon my official character.  I would therefore respectfully, though earnestly request that an Officer be sent here to investigate my official and private character.  If I am direlect in duty as alleged, I am not
