I have the honor herewith of inclosing to you a  note from Genl. O.O. Howard stating his desire for me to have a place under your appointment

I have to say if I am so appointed I will use my utmost indeavors to do my duty faithfully. This is the first time I have asked for any position under the Government since the Rebellion although I served as an Officer from the first Bull Run fight to the end of it
