Total compensation of all classes of Employer of the Medical Department of the Bureau for Month of Augt, $1150.00 No change since last report in number of Surgeons but a change in persons.
Dr E.R. Carey's contract has been annuled at the commencement of the Month, and Dr E. H. Smith contracted with. Dr Smith was assigned to duty, Augt 1" at Richmond, in quarters, releiving Dr Kenny, who was ordered to Yorktown to relieve Dr Carey.
I have been making careful investigations to learn, whether, for purposed of economy, a medical officer could be withdrawn from any stations: The result is, - I think it cannot be done at present without causing much suffering. I shall keep close watch over the District, and lessen the expenses of the Medical Department as rapidly as possible, consistat with the demands of humanity.
The Medical officers under my orders appear to be doing faithful service, and have enough to do to keep them actively at work. Dr Smith, who, is stationed at Richmond in charge of freemen in quarters, is greatly [[?]] with work - and does more
