I do not however, recommend any increase in the number of Medical Officers - Dr Smith knew the amount of work to be done - and took his contract, and [[?]] with a full understanding that his duties must be laborious. I have contracted with Dr. Smith's son, who is a Physician, in the place of Mr. Vaughan, as is [[?]], with the understanding that all spare time shall be devoted to assisting his father in his duties. His compensations is the same with that of the discharged Dispensary Steward and there is a full understanding that he shall receive no extra compensation for these services. He is a young man of some experience in practice of Medicine, and under this arrangement I belive there will be no great amount of suffering for want of medical aid among those who are not able to provide for themselves. The sanitary condition of the District of Virginia is comparatively good. No epedemic infections or contagious diseases are now prevailing.
