left word here when he went away that he could have been retained if he desired at the same rate of pay as he received whilst he held a berth in the Army. I can only reiterate General that I have no fault to find with my position or pay and shall continue with pleasure to do my duty fully and completely. Still if my salary can be advanced on just, fair, & legal grounds it would please me.

I feel sure that you will not misconstrue this communication & that you will give me your ideas upon the subject. You are well aware that $100 will hardly pay one who performs his duties faithfully and moves about from point to point in his command. I hope that you will give me your advice upon this subject and awaiting your reply.
