Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen adn Abandoned Lands,
Head-Quarters Fifth Division, Seventh Sub-District of Virginia,
Counties of Bath, Alleghany and Rockbridge.
Lexington, Va., August 27th 1868

General O. Brown
Asst. Commr.

General:
In view of my probable departure from Lexington, I would respectfully request that the officer lately appointed as Military Commissioner at this place be instructed by his superiors to give his attention and supervision to the case of Caesar Griffen Freedboy now on bail for trial before the September term of the County Court at this place on a charge of "shooting with intent to kill" one Brokenborough a white man. I was present throughout the whole sitting of the Examining Court in this case and the said Caesar Griffen by the evidence there addressed is wholly innocent of the charge with which he is charged and acted wholly in self defense. I am convinced however that on account of the state of feeling existing in this community that he, the said Caesar, will receive no justice unless the Military Authorities interfere.

I am General,
Very Respectfully
Your obt servant
