Respectfully returned to Gen'l. O. Brown, Asst. Comr Dist. of Va., I should be glad if Capt. Gates could get a place that would be acceptable to him and that he could fill with credit to the service. The 4th Division of my district is a very important one, and requires a very discreet person.

Mr. Havens reported yesterday, and I am much pleased with him, and think he is just the man I wanted for the place. I hope you may have another place for Capt. Gates. who I have a great deal of sympathy for, on account of the loss of his leg.
