Sir,

I have been requested by an afflicted Freedman to make to you the following statement, and ask that you will cause such action to be taken as will secure justice for him. 

Jackson Wells contracted to labour for Mr R.D. Rouzie the last year for a part of the crop grown upon Rouzie's land.  Wells discharged faithfully his part of the contract until he was taken sick, by which he lost thirty days 

The father of Wells directly upon his son becoming sick sent three others, men, to take the place of the sick man, but Rouzie refused to accept their labour.

Upon the recovery of Wells he submited to Rouzie these propositions, by the way of making up the time lost when sick

1st  To secure all the Fodder and corn without any aid from Rouzie.  This offer being rejected by R.  Wells officer in addition to the offer stated about to cut, haul & stack all of his Hay.  This was also refused, and at the close of the year, Rouzie put
