Petersburgh, Va. Dec. 17th 1868
General O. Brown

Dear Sir
Help Help, O help us. You have read no doubt of the refusal of our white breatherin to cooperate with us in releasing the necessities of our poor. they have made a political Machenery of it and our white friends that would have helped us regardless of color has had to submit to circumstances beyond there control. The Bureau hear is well and abley sustained by Major Stone but what can one man do against the accumulating prejudice hear. I have a sewing circle of ladies attached to my church the Zion Methodist of Union St and we have worked up all of our material for clothes for the poor. We want to buy 200 yards of calico for dresses for our poor women. Will you not dear General help us. Our only joy is to relieve the needs of wretched souls, and help the helpless poor. I am at present confined to my church, but as soon as the time comes I am your as heretofore.
Yours faithfully
John V. Given
