At once the cry was raised that the colored people were throwing stones, when the whites commenced firing pistols; several shots were fired. I could learn of no damage resulting from said firing, except from the person of Patron Jones, colored. I found this man in the Station house and from outward signs thought his care a critical one. I had the coroner of the city sent for and an antemortem examination had over the case. Patron was in his right mind, and states that whilst quietly sitting and listening to the speaker a couple of men approached him, one of whom struck him a blow in the face with a pistol from which he jumped up and started to run when he was fired at by someone, unknown to him.
