Bu R F & AL. Office A.S.A.C.
2nd Div. 3d Sub Dist. Ashland, Va.
Sept 3d" 1868

Lieut P.R. Hambrick,
S.A.C. 3d" Sub, Dist. Va.

Lieutenant,
Nat Haines (col'd) who resides near Beaver Dam Depot in this County, has made complaint at this Office that G.N. Thompson, of whom he rents a piece of land at $45.00, payable Janry 1st/69, made oath before Justice C.E. Thompson, that he believed said Haines was "about to leave the state", whereupon the Justice issued an attachment upon certain of his property to satisfy said rent.

Haines stated as his cause of grievance that he has no intention of leaving the state-- has never had, and has never said or done anything to give ground for such belief, and that he believed the action was taken for the purposes of putting him to expense and trouble because of his politics.
