Bureau R. F & A.L
Office A.S.A.Comr 2nd Div 3d Sub Dist. Ashland Va
Sept 9th 1868
H.V. Graves Esqr,
Dear Sir,
Your note of the 2nd, with reference to the case of Nat Hains (col'd) was duly received, and I immediately forwarded a full statement of the matter to Lieut P.R. Hambrick Military Commissioner for his action.
From the statement of Dr Thompson, and also from the copy of the warrant which he furnished this office, it does not appear that the attachment was issued upon the oath of G.N. Thomson that in his belief, Haines was to "leave the state"; but that the produce would be removed from the leased premises "before the rent should become due". The action of the County Court, however, was based upon the first form of oath. How this discrepancy occurred, or what the action of the military may be, I am not able to say.
Very Rightly Yours,
Ira Ayer Jr. A.S.A.Comr.
