Binns was soon apprehended and taken before a magistrate who remanded him to jail, to await a further examination by the county court, and refused the prisoner bail. Soon after said examination the regular meeting of the county court was held, when the prisoner made application to that body to be allowed bail; he was brought before the court and after a protracted examination of witnesses it was decided to admit the prisoner to bail in the sum of fifteen hundred dollars. Mr Townsend then A.S.A.C. in and for said county was present, he informs me that the case against the prisoner was unquestionably a clear one of wilful [[willful]] murder, yet in face of such positive guilt he was not only allowed his freedom but given to understand that no white man would be convicted of murder in Charles City Co.
