was allowed to go at large on $1000.00 bail and even though the Statute of Virginia say plainly that "felony" is not a bailable offence.  Now let us look at the other side of the picture.

Case No. 5! is a Colored man named Jack Parker. This poor miserable mister man visited a hell hole where liquor is sold on the Sabbath.  Whilst there he got into a controversy with another miserable being a White man named John C. McGhee who with his son had visited said hell for the purpose of making brutes of themselves.  The controversy waxed warm and the whites being two to one the negro attempted to leave the place.  He was pursued by the white men, McGhee & son, who were armed one with an axe, and  the other with a large stick, and when they had nearly reached the Colored man, he turned and fired at the foremost of his pursuers, who was approaching with murderous intent, the shot taking effect, from which the man died.
