whom a White man named John Bossean turned his Cattle out, notwithstanding the fence laws are in full force compelling all persons owning Cattle to keep them up and they trespassed upon this old Colored man's growing crop; the old man had his damages assessed by a white man and taking the papers came to Richmond and warranted Bossean to whom the cattle belonged for the amount of damages. In Richmond he was told by the learned Recorder Gilliam, acting as Mayor, that as the Case occurred in [strikethrough]] the County [[/strikethrough]] Hanover County he must sue before a Magistrate of the County. He did as instructed and on trial before Justice Austin, after hearing the case and nature of claim, was told by this servant of the law to - "clear out of Court," without any cause being assigned by this wise justice for such action.
