I have the honor to submit the following report of the murder of Peyton Jones, a freedman, and the trial of Jack Wren, alias John Wren, before the Hastings Court, Judge H. B. Burnham presiding, charged with committing said murder.
At a conservative meeting held at the Old Market in this City August 11th 1868, a stone was thrown by some party unknown at the crowd in attendance. The cry was instantly raised that the Negroes were storming the meeting and a rush was made towards the place from which it was supposed the Stone had been thrown. This rush was made by a party of well known roughs of the City, and they commenced firing upon the Colored people without distinction and whether they were peacibly disposed or not.
