down any man in the room."

Rice, who seems to have made himself, for the time being at least, their associate, got up, walked to the middle of the room and said "Come out here" or "walk out here", his evident meaning being that he was willing to try his strength with Powells. After a few passes Powell knocked Rice against the side of the room, when the latter, becoming enraged, seized an axe and drew it as if to strike Powell. Here the other col'd man interfered and begged of Rice not to strike. Rice then lowered the axe and holding it in his hand went outside to a pile of brick one of which he took up and threw at Powell. He then, laying down the axe, went 75 or 100 yards away, to another building, where he procured a shot gun which was loaded. Returning with this he saw Powell standing in the door of the kitchen and immediately drew and fired at him. Several of the shot hit Powell. One struck him in the eye destroying his sight. With that exception he has about recovered.
