-federate Government was by compulsion, that the Agent of said Gov't applied to him several times to buy the timber, he refusing at each interview, when at the last interview it was impressed. What the board desire, is to know if any order was ever given by the Treasury Department for the return of said property to the said W. R. Gates.
The timber on the land at the present time is very valuable. That it was the property of the Confederate Government (so-called) there can be no doubt. -  Can the fact be ascertained from the Treasury Department in Washington - whether or not an order was even issued by authority of said Department relative to this property.
