yesterday to a large Union Audience and many threats were made of injury to him which only a hour of opportunity prevents. Mr. S. Cockrell, a Deputy Sheriff of this County, paid openly to a crowd of whites: "This man Douglass must leave this place or he will get hell- he is a q-s, d-s Radical who will be one of a party to hang him to the nearest tree twill entry the work more than anything I ever did in my life" -U.B. Jacob. U. S. Asst Assessor of Int. Rev. for this Dish heard him say these words. They entirely accord with the outspoken views of this class of men. I do not know this Cockrell personally but have seen him often and have heard, frequently, of his making similar remarks- I regret, General, that such men are left to exercise the influence which such speeches do have upon the lawless portion of a community from the fact that they are not called to account by the Authority which if they do not twill not reflect they certainly ought to hear. If the increase of such contemferable opposition is as great as it promises to be I fear that our timid men will be influenced to a degree that will be injurious at the elections.

Very Respectfully,
Your obedient servant
