I have the honor to report that between the hours of 12 and 3 on Friday morning Aug 28 a party of armed men numbering twelve or fifteen persons went to the house of George Shepard (colored) about 1 1/2 miles from Maysville, Buckingham Co. enquired for Alvin Varner and finding he was in bed broke open the door dragged Mr Varner from his bed with no clothing on save his shirt carried him to a gully about 100 yards from the house, placed a cloth on his head and made preparations, real or pretended, to hang him. An old colored man Anderson Snoddy, was carried or found near them at the moment and while they were beating him Mr Varner escaped from them three or more shots being fired after him while running
