When Sandy came back Mr Gurst would not give up the horses and has kept them ever since. Since 1865 the mare has had 2 colts and all four are now in possession of Mr G. Sandy claims all four and says Mr. Gurst has derived benefit enough from their work for 3 years to compensate him for his trouble & expense. Lt. Scott investigated the case some 4 months ago, I think, and recommended that the 2 horses be given back to Sandy and the 2 colts be retained by Mr Gurst. There is no doubt about the 2 horses being given to Sandy by the soldiers, and when he was in Richmond he was assured (so he says) that the horses should be restored to him
