Captain,
I have the honor to enclose letters to Samuel Ellis late of Co. "A." 1st U.S.C. Troops, and Thaddius Diggs late of Co. "F." 1st U.S.C. Tps. You will please have these parties found and the letters delivered to them if possible.

A colored man named Saml Ellis, a discharged soldier from the U.S.A. was shot & killed by a policeman (Kett' Diggs) in Portsmouth, Va. sometime in May last, leaving a wife there — If this was the Ellis above referred to, transmit the letter to his wife.

The Asst. Commissioner directs that you delay removing the wood & lumber from the "Taylor farm," until the application of Tazewell Taylor in behalf of W.E. Taylor, for the retention of the same, is heard from — it having been forwarded to Washington.

Lt.
Absalom James (Cold) reports that he hired of Mr. R.A. Graves Powhatan County a negro previous to the evacuation of Richmond, for one year, for which he was to pay a stipulated sum; that Mr. Graves has obtained a judgement against him in the Civil Courts for the amount due for the years service. If this statement is correct you will inform Mr. Graves that the Negro Sam Green was free, and that he has no right to receive the wages for Sam's services. The right of Sam to compensation for his own labor, after the fall of Richmond cannot be questioned.

You will forbid the sale of Absalom James' property for the purpose of paying the claim aforesaid.

You will report your action in this case through the
