and his friends not allowed to visit him. Mr Jos. Jones of Brunswick Co. but a few days ago called at the jail with some clothes &c for him but was refused admittance & not even allowed to pass a word with him.  Dr Lewis is at this time suffering from chills & fever, while his diet is insufficient & neglected. He is a frail man and I cld not believe that the poor fellow can live if compelled to lay in that loathsome jail until caught to trial before the jail tribunals. Further his patients, he having been practicing medicine among the colored people, crops and school are suffering by his absence.
This affair can but be regarded as one of the most enormous outrages ever perpetrated on man, unwarranted by  law or justice.
I claim in all candor & impartiality that the alleged charges against Dr. Lewis were not sustained by the evidence for the prosecution. He did not by any means have an impartial hearing. He was denied the privilege of
