interests throughout the county. At Pittsylvania O.K. the colored people will build themselves a school house if aided somewhat by the Govt. This effort in connection with an occasional sunday school sums the only indication towards educational improvement observed in the division outside of Danville. Lieutenant Mahoney's official course seems to give general satisfaction. I have no material change to note in regard to Lieutenant Stevenson. Papers and records are still in good condition. The civil authorities claim full ability through their lives to provide for all destitute and so far have furnished subsistence to any case of destitution referred them. Wages have ruled rather low as a rule, while the closing of the tobacco factories in this city bring necessarily some suffering, yet I regard the condition of the colored people as good. There is at least not so much suffering among them as among the poorer class of whites. I would say generally that I regard the condition of the blacks in my sub District as good.
