increase of interest in educational matters where the imitrative has been assumed by northern influence. Outside of this influence the blacks have apparently small power to concentrate upon any system. At Henry C.N. they have a rough board schoolhouse nearly complete but it has required the aid and energy of the Bureau Officer and many loyal citizens to get even that. I have visited in person during the quarter nearly every school in my sub district and notice a gradual improvement among all grades of schoolers.

Here at Lynchburg and at Danville under the direction of the competent teachers in charge there are great advances towards the higher branches on the part of many scholars and I doubt whether whites in any locality can show more creditable progression.

With little fear of destitution and want among the Freedmen of my sub District and the encouraging prospects for them under the protection of the government for the coming seasons I can report the condition of Bureau matters as
