Coroners inquest; Young Bragg was arrested the day of the fight, but acquitted of all blame in the transaction,  The colored people feel that they cannot get justice at the hands of the civil authorities and I fear that if an example is not made, that they will be constrained in self defence to take the law into their own hands.  I think this is a proper case for action by the Military Authorities and arrest of the parties concerned, some such action would tend to allay the excitement among the freedpeople.  I visited Salem and Piedmont and found good schools at those places.  The people generally doing well, but the ignorant class of the whites very bitter in their feelings toward the negroes.

In Alexandria Co, which is in charge of Bvt. Capt. Edward Field, A.S.A.C, the colored people are doing well, all the able bodied men finding plenty of employment at the coal wharves and other branches of commercial business, their general condition is good, the schools are about closing for the summer vacation, having had a very successful session and been productive of much good.
