State of Virginia Bedford County to wit 
In the County Court of the said county

The Jurors of the Commonwealth of Virginia, in and for the body of the county of Bedford and now attending the County Court of the said County upon their oaths present, that R H Woddell, late of the said County, not having the fear of God before his eyes, but being moved and seduced by the instigation of the devil on the fifth day of June, in the year one thousand eight hundred and sixty eight, in the said county with force and arms in and upon one Henry Clay did make an assault; and that the said R H Woddell with a certain knife, in his hand then and there held, the said Henry Clay, in and upon the right side of the body, between the ribs of him, the said Henry Clay, then and there feloniously, wilfully, deliberately, premediately  and of his malace aforethought did strike and thrust; giving the said Henry Clay then and there, with the knife aforesaid in and upon the aforesaid right side of the body, between the ribs of him, the said Henry Clay, one mortal wound of the breadth of three inches and of the depth of six inches; of which said mortal wound, he the said Henry Clay, then and there instantly died. And so the Jurors aforesaid upon their oaths aforesaid, do say that the said R H Woddell, him the said Henry Clay in the manner and form aforesaid, feloniously, wilfully, deliberately, and of his maloce aforethought did kill and murder, against the peace and dignity of the Commonwealth of Virginia
