The testimony of Dr N.L. Cheatwood taken before an inquest held on the fifth day of June 1868 at the residence of Mrs Ann E Bolling in the County of Bedford and State of Virginia vr mor these in relation to the death of Henry Clay (Colored) a man over whose body an inquest was held on the aforesaid date and after being duly sworn deposeth and sayeth
Question Dr you have examined the body of the deceased state what was the cause of his death.
Answer Effects of two wounds of the right lung produced by a sharp instrument one taking effect between the fifth and sixth ribs near the sternum and the other between the sixth and seventh ribs, the hemorrhage therefrom producing death.

Before the court at which RH Woddell was acquitted he stated the above facts and also that one of the wounds was about one fourth of an inch deep in the lung and that the other was about 3/4 of an inch deep in the lung, also that Woddell that night called his attention to some marks upon his (Woddells) person that he examined him and found a mark upon his temple looked as if produced by a blow also marks upon the back of his neck looked as if produced by finger nails also that he examined the body of Henry Clay carefully and found no other marks of violence upon his person
