I regard the general condition of the freedmen as good Labor has not been in much excess. Justice here as elsewhere in rather a doubtful matter before Juries. A conservative negro cuts the throat of a radical negro and escapes with little punishment. A radical negro slightly wounds a white man under provocation and is sentenced several years to the State prison.
The military will be withdrawn from Lexington.
Division No 6 Appomattox County Lieut L.A. Nesmith 12th U.S. Infy in charge This division seems almost an exception to the others of the sub District. The land is poor generally labor much in excess of demand and as a consequence the general condition of the freedmen is not so good as elsewhere in the sub-District. A Mr Varner was taken from his
