I received by last mail my special report of Sept 22nd returned with an endorsment from the asst commr that the report was absolutely worth nothing &c and ordering the S.A.C. to instruct me in my duties of now  Sir I wish to make an explanation in regard to my monthly and special reports as will be seen by my special report most of them cases were reported the last part of the month just before I made my monthly report for August and I did not have time to investigate the cases before I made that report I however summened several of the parties before me but no one but the plaintiffs appeared I then reported the cases to the military commissioner at Danville and ordered all parties making complaint of assualt to meet me at the office or the military Commissioner on the 1st day of September for the purpose of having him summon the parties before him for investigation.  but one freedman came at the time specified Calvin Muse and he was unable to tell who had beat him as the
