until the night of the 23d or morning of the 24th inst. During his absence the outrages were committed, and the flag pole in front of his office was cut down and burned. He had made no investigation, but contented himself by letting a twice repeated insult to the United States Flag, go without even an effort to have the parties brought to punishment. On a former occasion, during his absence, the flag pole was taken down, and the flag itself carried off, but subsequently returned in a torn and dilapidated condition.[[/strikethrough]].
