Major Hopkins
Dr Sir

There is a deed on record here from Ichabod Mallory and wife etc to Ambrose Madison for a lot of land lying in the town of Orange upon which Fanny Morris formerly resided. This lot was conveyed to Mr. Madison in fee and not held in trust for another, so from the record it would seem, that Mr. M, or his heirs, has the legal title. As Fanny Morris was a colored woman and could not hold real estate under the laws of Virginia, it may have been bought with her money, and the deed made to Mr. Madison.

Mrs. Mary J. Mallory, living at Gordonsville, who joined in the deed to A Madison, might give you all the information desired.

Very Resp, etc
