give me a reasonable notice) and the man released by giving fifty dollar bail to keep the peace.

The other case was one in which a white man insulted a colored mans wife by calling her every indecent epithet, and on her husbands asking him what it was for, threw & struck him with rocks and injured him though not seriously - In this case as in the other bail to keep the peace, in the sum of fifty dollars was all that was required: although the ordinance of the corporation - Ord: 21 Sec. 2. declare that breaches of the peace shall be punished by a fine of not less than one, not more than twenty dollars.

If the offence be so serious as to require a heavier punishment, it cannot be tried by an single magistrate.

Bail in a nominal sum is required, is seldom given, and the offender escapes scotfree.

Very Respectfully
