General:
I have the honor to report that a shooting affray occurred at Mechanicsville in Louisa Co. on Friday last the 19th of June resulting in the wounding of a Freedman named Wm Riley by a white man named James M. Turner.

I attended the examination of Mr. Turner before C.G. Goodman a Magistrate of Louisa Co. for the offense and it appeared from the evidence adduced that the shooting of Riley was the result of drunkenness on the part of Turner. He had no quarrel with Riley and they were both members of the Union League and good friends. Turner has been beside himself with liquor for some time and
