certain that any substantial injustice had been done in consequence of these proceedings, I thought it wiser to wait until a clear case of wrong had actually resulted before recommending action, in his case. The same remarks apply to the Magistrates.

The Circuit Court sits here on the first day of September next. The case of William Thompson (who is now in jail awaiting trial for the murder of Henry Brown) will come up at this Court. Henry Brown was a servant in the employ of Capt. J.F. Wilson, my predecessor here. I think it hardly probable that a jury will be found here who will convict Thompson. As nearly as I can ascertain, the defence will set up the plea of insanity.

Thompson was in what is here termed "a drunken frolic", when he shot Brown, and I think it very probable the lawyers and doctors will, together manage to make the case a difficult one, especially if Mr. Fleming should fail in his duty. I would therefore respectfully recommend that some suitable person of legal attainments be sent here by competent authority to watch the proceedings, and if need be to assist Mr. Fleming actively in the case.

Very Respectfully
